Pine Needle Group Report
on the
2003 NC Gourd Festival

photos by Pamela Zimmerman and Lynn Hoyt

Lynn Hoyt makes notes in the Special Talents Section of the 2003 NC Gourd Festival Exhibits As the focus of this group is coiling, this first page just contains the woven categories in the exhibit portion of the NC Gourd Festival. Most of the weaving done on gourds in recent years which we have seen has been coiling, or looping, which is sometimes called "coiling without foundation." This year, however, woven entries were dominated by Marianne Barnes, whose chosen technique is not coiling.

The Gourd Show moved this year, into a much larger facility, the Dorton Arena, which was something of an improvment. In addition to much more space than the previous location, there was alot more natural light, as well as some refreshments on site. The exhibits were right up front, as we came in the door. But we soon discovered there was not much security...several pieces had "lost" their ribbons, and there was no published list of winners. Only by perserverance after the show were we able to identify ribbon winners in some of the categories with which we were concerned. If your gourd is shown here, and not identified properly (or as a ribbon winner), our apologies. Please email us with corrections! Thanks.

Click on each photo to see the category participants or winners. Page will open in a separate window. Descriptions of categories are given from the rules distributed prior to entry.
